Essential nighttime restriction in Ardfinnan to protect daytime supplies for homes, businesses and communities
Critical works at the water treatment plant successfully completed
Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section
Uisce Éireann have been working hard to progress with a major upgrade of the Goatenbridge Water Treatment Plant and crews have successfully completed planned works which took place yesterday. These critical works necessitated a shutdown of the water treatment plant to facilitate the works, resulting in a drop in treated water reservoir levels.
Customers in Ardfinnan are asked to continue supporting local water conservation efforts as temporary overnight restrictions are introduced tonight to help recovery of treated water reservoir levels which will support further planned upgrade works at the Goatenbridge Water Treatment Plant.
To prepare for these works, nighttime restrictions will be in place from tonight, Wednesday 23 September, operating from 9pm to 8am each night until the morning of Friday 2 October.
Customer may experience lower than normal water pressure during this time. This will support to protect daytime supply for homes, businesses, and essential services during the planned works.
The areas impacted are Ardfinnan Village, Cahir Road, Clogheen North, Lady Abbey, Newcastle, Neddans, Poulator Road, Clogheen South and surrounding areas.
To support impacted customers, an alternative water supply is available on the Main Street in Ardfinnan Village.
By limiting the amount of water leaving the network during these quieter hours, reservoirs can replenish and be ready to meet demand. The aim is to minimise disruption while helping to maintain a reliable daytime supply for the community.
Normal water supplies will start returning from 8am each morning. Customers in higher-lying areas or at the ends of the network may experience a longer wait while the water network refills.
Pierce Faherty, Uisce Éireann said:
"We know how important a reliable water supply is to everyday life. These temporary measures are being introduced to prepare for critical works and help protect daytime water supplies for homes, schools, businesses, healthcare facilities and community services across the area.
“We would like to thank customers for the efforts they are already making to conserve water. Every small action helps. The support and cooperation shown by the community is making a real difference in helping to protect local supplies.
“By continuing to use water carefully, we can work together to reduce pressure on the network and help maintain supplies for everyone who relies on them."
Customers can continue to support local supplies by making simple changes such as:
- Turning off the tap while brushing teeth or shaving.
- Taking shorter showers where possible.
- Using a watering can instead of a hose in the garden.
- Checking homes and properties for leaks.
- Turning off water in vacant buildings where it is not needed.
These simple actions can collectively make a significant difference to water demand across the area and helps ensure there is enough water available for everyone who depends on the local supply.
Uisce Éireann will continue to closely monitor water levels and network performance and will keep customers informed of any updates.

Previous Updates
Uisce Éireann have been working hard to progress with a major upgrade of the Goatenbridge Water Treatment Plant which will support the lifting of the Boil Water Notice which remains in place across the Ardfinnan Regional Water Supply.

To prepare for this, we are introducing temporary restrictions from tonight, Friday 18 September, at 9pm to Monday 21 September 8am. Uisce Éireann's John Fogarty said:
“We know how important a safe and reliable water supply is to everyday life and we understand the inconvenience supply restrictions and a boil water notice cause for customers, families, businesses and community groups across the area.
“Over the next few days, limiting the amount of water leaving the plant, will allow reservoirs to replenish and be ready to meet demand ahead of planned works. Our crews are working hard to progress with the delivery of the upgrade at the Goatenbridge Water Treatment Plant which when complete will provide a safer more reliable supply of water for the wider community.
"We wish to remind customers that the Boil Water Notice on the Ardfinnan Regional Water Supply remains in place. It is critical to boil the water before consumption. Protecting public health is always our top priority.
“We would like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation while these essential works are carried out and remain committed to lifting the Boil Water Notice as soon as it is safe to do so."

Drinking water experts from Uisce Éireann are working to lift the notice as quickly and as safely as possible, in consultation with the HSE.
Uisce Éireann’s Pierce Faherty said: “We acknowledge the inconvenience of a Boil Water Notice on the local community and would like to assure customers that we are working to resolve the issue and lift the notice as soon as it is safe to do so.”
Uisce Éireann’s drinking water standards, as per EU Drinking Water regulations, are strict and include wide safety margins. Where risks to water quality are identified through Uisce Éireann’s enhanced testing and monitoring programme, the Health Service Executive (HSE) is consulted, and Boil Water Notices are issued to protect public health. In all instances immediate action is taken to address the cause of the issue to enable the lifting of the notice as quickly as it safe to do so, in agreement with the HSE.
Vulnerable customers who have registered with Uisce Éireann receive direct communication on Boil Water Notices. Customers are reminded that the water is safe to consume once boiled.
Water must be boiled for:
- Drinking;
- Drinks made with water;
- Preparation of salads and similar foods, which are not cooked prior to eating;
- Brushing of teeth;
- Making of ice - discard ice cubes in fridges and freezers and filtered water in fridges. Make ice from cooled boiled water.
What actions should be taken:
- Use water prepared for drinking when preparing foods that will not be cooked (e.g. washing salads);
- Water can be used for personal hygiene, bathing and flushing of toilets but not for brushing teeth or gargling;
- Boil water by bringing to a vigorous, rolling boil (e.g. with an automatic kettle) and allow to cool. Cover and store in a refrigerator or cold place. Water from the hot tap is not safe to drink. Domestic water filters will not render water safe to drink;
- Caution should be taken when bathing children to ensure that they do not swallow the bathing water;
- Preparing Infant Formula: Where a Boil Water Notice is in place, you can prepare infant formula from tap water that has been boiled once (rolling boil for 1 minute) and cooled beforehand. Bottled water can also be used to make up infant formula. All bottled water, with the exception of natural mineral water, is regulated to the same standard as drinking water. It is best not to use bottled water labelled as ‘Natural Mineral Water’ as it can have high levels of sodium (salt) and other minerals, although it rarely does. ‘Natural Mineral Water’ can be used if no other water is available, for as short a time as possible, as it is important to keep babies hydrated. If bottled water is used to make up infant formula it should be boiled once (rolling boil for 1 minute), and cooled in the normal way. Ready-to-use formula that does not need added water can also be used.
- Great care should be taken with boiled water to avoid burns and scalds as accidents can easily happen, especially with children.
