Boosting Bushypark as mains upsizing works commence

Delivering a more secure and reliable supply of drinking water for our customers is one of Uisce Éireann’s core objectives. As part of that effort, we are set to begin a new programme of works in the Bushypark area of Galway city, which will see nearly a kilometre of existing water mains upsized and upgraded.

The works are set to take place along the Ballagh Road from the junction with the N59 to the junction with the Gortacleva Road. The project will involve the upsizing of 923 metres of existing water mains.

The works are being caried out under Uisce Éireann’s Accelerated Growth Programme. Projects under this designation are focused on increasing the capacity of public water networks in areas of high housing demand, enabling the delivery of new housing while also improving the quality, reliability and resilience of water services for existing customers.

Enda Mac Namara, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, said that these works will help to increase the capacity of the local network and improve the delivery of clean drinking water to existing and future customers in the area.

“We are delighted to be commencing works on this programme of mains upsizing on the Ballagh Road,” said Enda.

“This investment will boost the capacity of the water network in the Bushypark and Tonabrocky areas of Galway and will ensure that the network is equipped to service future housing growth and development in the surrounding area.

“These works will also provide tangible benefits for existing customers in the area, by improving the reliability of the supply and reducing the risk of operational issues moving forward.”

In order for the works to be carried out safely, a road closure will be necessary along the Ballagh Road. Areas of work will be limited to short spaces at a time to minimise disruption. Local diversion routes will be clearly signposted, and local and emergency access will be maintained at all times. Works will take place from Monday to Friday, between 8am and 5pm, to minimise disruption.

The works on the Ballagh Road are scheduled to begin from next week and are expected to be completed by December 2026. The works will be carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
