Essential leakage reduction works progressing in Celbridge and Newcastle

Uisce Éireann and South Dublin County Council are advising road users that an extension to the existing road closure on the R405 Hazelhatch Road is now required until Friday, 15 January 2027.

The extension is required to facilitate the completion of essential water, stormwater and telecommunications infrastructure currently being delivered along Hazelhatch Road.

The project involves the replacement of ageing water infrastructure on behalf of Uisce Éireann, together with the installation of a new surface water pipeline and telecommunications ducting on behalf of South Dublin County Council.

Delivering these three utilities through a single coordinated programme is a more efficient and less disruptive approach than completing the works separately, which would require further construction activity and additional road closures.

As the works have progressed, unexpected ground conditions have impacted the delivery programme.

Progress has been made across the project. To date, 1,500 metres of water main has been replaced, 1,250 metres of surface water pipeline has been installed, and 950 metres has been completed on the telecommunications ducting.

The project will provide a more reliable water supply for customers and businesses by reducing leakage, improving water pressure and reducing the frequency of watermain bursts. The new infrastructure will also support future development in Newcastle and Celbridge, including approximately 3,500 new homes across three sites.

Uisce Éireann’s Mark O’Duffy, said: “We recognise the impact that the ongoing closure is having on residents, businesses and road users, and we apologise for the continued disruption. We are engaging with local residents and businesses to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.

“Progress has been made across the water, stormwater and telecommunications elements of the project. However, unexpected ground conditions have affected the overall delivery programme, and additional time is now required to complete the remaining works.

“We will continue to work closely with South Dublin County Council and our delivery partner to complete the works as efficiently and safely as possible.”

The road closure applies from the junction of the R405 Hazelhatch Road with Loughtown Road to the junction of the R405 Hazelhatch Road with Athgoe Road.

A signposted diversion will remain in place, and access for local residents, businesses and emergency services will be maintained throughout the works.

Works may be suspended during the Christmas and New Year period.

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann is working to reduce leaks every day. Fixing leaks can be complicated. We have over 65,000 km of water pipes underground in Ireland - enough to circle the earth one and a half times. Most leaks aren’t visible, resulting in precious water being lost but we are making progress. Leakage levels are now at their lowest ever with water loss reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% nationally.

This project is being delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme which continues to deliver significant benefits to communities across Ireland, including improved water quality, provision of a more resilient and sustainable water supply for customers, and considerable water savings.
