Newtowncashel community benefit as new pipes in place to improve water supply
Families and businesses in Newtowncashel can look forward to a stronger, more dependable water supply as Uisce Éireann wraps up important upgrade works on the local water network. These improvements are all about supporting everyday life in the community, whether it’s putting the kettle on in the morning, running a local business, or keeping community services flowing smoothly with clean, reliable water.
As part of this project, we replaced 2kms of ageing water mains with modern, resilient pipes. These older pipes had been prone to bursts and leaks, causing supply interruptions and wasting treated drinking water, a precious resource.
The upgraded network now brings greater reliability to homes and businesses right across Newtowncashel, providing a water service people can count on for years to come.

This upgrade is just one example of how Uisce Éireann is tackling leakage across the country. With more than 65,000kms of underground water mains – enough to circle the earth one and a half times – finding and fixing leaks can be challenging, especially when they are hidden. But progress is being made. National leakage is now at its lowest level ever, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.

At Uisce Éireann, we’re committed to providing a reliable water supply for everyone in the community. To help make that happen, we’re getting underway with works to replace old and damaged water mains in Newtowncashel, Co. Longford.
From the Church of the Blessed Virgin through Newtowncashel village along the L1150, our crews will be installing almost 2km of new, modern pipes that will strengthen the local network and reduce disruption to homes and businesses.
The existing pipes were prone to bursts and leaks, leading to supply interruptions and the loss of treated drinking water, a valuable resource we all depend on.
Welcoming the project, Dave Murphy of Uisce Éireann said that these upgrades will help stop leakage and give the community in Newtowncashel greater confidence in their water supply for years to come.

Works are due to begin towards the end of April and will involve the replacement of old and damaged pipeline connecting Newtowncashel Water Treatment Plant (WTP) to Newtowncashel reservoir with new modern pipes.
The project is being delivered by Shareridge Ltd on behalf of Uisce Éireann with completion expected by the end of June 2026.
