Works underway on nature-based wastewater treatment plant in Grangemockler

Works are underway at Uisce Éireann's innovative wastewater treatment project in Grangemockler, which will provide a new nature-based wastewater treatment plant that will support sustainable growth while protecting the local environment.

The new treatment plant, a constructed wetland system, is designed to look and function as a natural wetland. Once complete, it will provide a sustainable wastewater treatment solution that significantly reduces energy consumption and carbon emissions compared to conventional treatment processes. The system will also act as a carbon sink, helping to offset emissions from other sources while delivering long-term environmental benefits for the local community.

As part of the project, Uisce Éireann is constructing a new wastewater treatment plant, pumping station and rising main, while also decommissioning three existing wastewater treatment plants through the provision of new collector sewers. The investment will improve wastewater services in the area and create the capacity needed to support future development in the village.

The constructed wetland will feature a series of vegetated ponds planted with native species, creating new habitats and enhancing local biodiversity. With minimal above-ground infrastructure, the project has been designed to integrate naturally into the surrounding landscape.

This innovative nature-based solution demonstrates how investment in essential infrastructure can support local communities while delivering significant environmental benefits. 

"The constructed wetland will help protect sensitive local watercourses, including the Currasilla Upper Stream within the Lower River Suir Special Area of Conservation, while also providing the capacity needed to support sustainable growth and development in the area for years to come." 

Stantec and Ward & Burke Construction Ltd. are delivering the project on behalf of Uisce Éireann. 

The Grangemockler project forms part of Uisce Éireann's ongoing multi-million euro investment in wastewater infrastructure across County Tipperary. Recent upgrades have been completed in Newport, Ballina, Cahir and Fethard, major projects are progressing in Kilsheelan and Nenagh, while site investigations have been completed for a network upgrade project in Thurles.
