All roads lead to a more resilient water supply in Ennis as works complete
Gort Road is leading Ennis to a more resilient water supply as Uisce Éireann completes replacement of over 300m of aged water mains with new modern pipes.
The replacement of these water mains will improve service to customers, eliminate existing leaks along that section of the network and reduce the amount of clean drinking water which is lost into the ground every day for the Ennis community.
Speaking about the project, Jack Cronin, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, welcomes the completion of these works, saying,
“Another project in the banner county has now come to a close. This project ensures a more sustainable water supply for the town of Ennis. Replacing these old and damaged pipes will significantly lower the instances of bursts and deliver cost savings by improving the operation of the network, requiring less maintenance in the future. This will result in a positive impact on leakage and the daily lives of the residents. We would like to extend our thanks to the community for their patience while these works were carried out.”
Following the completion of the works, it is necessary to reinstate the permanent road surface, and these works will be programmed and carried out in due course by Uisce Éireann in partnership with Clare County Council.
Ward and Burke Construction Ltd carried out these works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
This project was delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme which continues to deliver significant benefits to communities across Ireland, including improved water quality, provision of a more resilient and sustainable water supply for customers, and considerable water savings.

Previous Updates
Uisce Éireann is set to begin works in Ennis next week to drive down leakage and improve supply to the local community.
These works will take place along the R458, Gort Road, Co Clare and involve the replacement of over 300m of aged water mains, prone to bursts as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.
Jack Cronin, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, welcomes this news, saying,
“As we commence this project in the banner county, this is a fitting opportunity to highlight the benefits of these continued works which will help put a stop to bursts, outages and leakage in the area and give locals and visitors alike an improved confidence in the security of their water supply. Uisce Éireann continues to work tirelessly to eliminate existing leaks. Fewer bursts and less leakage will ensure a more secure and reliable supply and enable communities like Ennis to thrive. I would like to thank the community for their support and patience while works are ongoing.”
To minimise disruption to the community, a section of these works along the R458 will be carried out at night-time, during off-peak hours. To safely and efficiently deliver the project, traffic management will be in place in the form of a stop and go traffic system. The remaining pipelaying works along the R458 will be carried out during normal working hours.
Ward and Burke Construction Ltd is carrying out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann with the project expected to be complete by the end of September 2025.
