Balbriggan to benefit from improved water supply and reduced leakage

At Uisce Éireann, we’re committed to providing a reliable water supply for everyone in the community. To help make that happen, we’re getting underway with works to replace old and damaged water mains in Balbriggan. These works will provide a more reliable water supply for local homes and businesses, reduce the risk of bursts and outages, and help conserve treated drinking water by significantly reducing leakage in the area.

Our crews are set to install over 1km of new, modern pipes along the Dublin Road, R132 in Kilsough, Balbriggan, that will strengthen the local network, improve water quality and reduce disruption to homes and businesses.

The existing pipes were prone to bursts, leading to supply interruptions and the loss of treated drinking water, a valuable resource we all depend on.

Welcoming the project, Declan Healy of Uisce Éireann said that these upgrades will help reduce bursts and give the community in Balbriggan greater confidence in their water supply for years to come.

“These works are about providing customers in Balbriggan with a more reliable water supply. By replacing the pipes with new, modern water mains, we can strengthen the local network, reduce bursts and help protect the supply for homes and businesses. We know works like this can cause some short-term disruption, and we appreciate the patience and cooperation of the local community as we deliver this important upgrade.”

The project is being delivered by GMC Utilities Group on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion expected in early 2027.

We have measures in place to keep disruption to an absolute minimum but to protect the public and our crews, a traffic management system will be in place during the works. A stop-go system will be in place in phases to minimise disruption. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann works every day to reduce leaks. With more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationally, enough to circle the earth one and a half times, fixing leaks can be complicated. Many are hidden, but we are making progress: National leakage is now at its lowest level ever, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.
