Newport can look forward to a brighter future following the completion of a €7 million upgrade to the town’s wastewater treatment plant.
The upgrade has boosted the performance and capacity of the plant, enabling it to serve a population equivalent of 3,600. This will support growth and development in the area, improving water quality in the Mulkear River while ensuring compliance with both national and European wastewater regulations.
Commenting on the project, Uisce Éireann Portfolio Manager Paul Fallon said: ‘The completion of this project is a significant step in ensuring modern, efficient wastewater infrastructure that supports the needs of the community while protecting the local environment. This investment will improve water quality in the Mulkear River, ensure regulatory compliance, and support sustainable growth in the area.
‘Newport is one of a series of key investments being made across Tipperary to upgrade wastewater infrastructure, supporting communities to grow and thrive while reinforcing our commitment to environmental protection’.
The upgrade involved building two new screened stormwater chambers, a new inlet works, along with a new stormwater storage tank, secondary treatment with final settlement tanks, plus the installation of new electrical controls.
Along with recent wastewater treatment plant upgrades in both Ballina and Cahir this is the latest in a series of several major investments in critical wastewater infrastructure in Tipperary, supporting much needed sustainable growth while ensuring regulatory compliance.
Uisce Éireann is responsible for the delivery of all public water and wastewater services in Ireland. We are committed to continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support the growth needed in housing and across our economy, while protecting the environment and safeguarding water supplies.
