Galway City’s west gets a water mains makeover

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

An improved supply of drinking water is on the way for homes and businesses to the west of Galway City with mains replacement works due to begin next week.

Uisce Éireann crews will arrive at Taylor’s Hill, Maunsells Road and St Mary’s Park and will replace more than a kilometre of aging cast iron mains with modern, plastic pipes.

These works are being carried out under Uisce Éireann’s National Leak Reduction Programme and will provide a more secure and reliable water supply for homes and businesses in the area, and will down rates of leakage on the network.

In total, 1,150 metres of mains will be replaced in this programme of works.

The project will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water mains in the road to customers’ property boundaries, and connecting these to the customers’ water supply.

Works are due to begin from Monday next (11 August) on Taylor’s Hill and will continue through the autumn, with an estimated completion date of early 2026.

Some sections of the works will require temporary traffic management measures, in the form of lane closures. These measures will be in place to ensure the health and safety of crews, road-users and the public. Local and emergency access will be maintained at all times.

Speaking about the significant improvement works, Uisce Éireann programme manager Enda Mac Namara said the residents and businesses owners of the Maunsells Road and Taylor’s Road areas can look forward to improved water quality and a more secure supply.

"These mains replacement works are essential to improve the quality of drinking water being supplied to homes and businesses in this area of Galway City.

“Once complete, Uisce Éireann customers in the surrounding areas will be able to enjoy a more secure and reliable supply.

“The works will also enable Uisce Éireann to reduce levels of leakage on the network, helping to protect and conserve our vital water resources,” said Enda.

The works will be carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
