Lismore watermain upgrade progresses as commissioning works continue this week

Uisce Éireann is moving into the final stages of a major upgrade to Lismore’s water network, with almost 2.5km of ageing watermains already replaced and the remaining section of works now approaching completion. This essential project, which will see almost 3km of the network upgraded in total along Deerpark Road and Lismore Bridge, is designed to significantly reduce leakage and strengthen supply for homes and businesses across the town.

To safely progress the commissioning works, customers in parts of Lismore may experience low water pressure or a temporary loss of supply this Friday, 20 February 2026, between 10 am and 4 pm. Water supply will begin to return gradually once the works are complete and the network has time to fully recharge.

Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager at Uisce Éireann, said: “This project represents a major investment in Lismore’s water network, with long-term benefits for the whole community. Replacing older, vulnerable watermains means fewer bursts, less leakage and a safer, more reliable water supply for homes and businesses. We would like to thank everyone in Lismore for their patience and support throughout these works as we move towards completing this final phase.”

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann is working every day to reduce leaks. Fixing leaks can be complex. Ireland has over 65,000 km of water pipes underground – enough to circle the earth one and a half times. Most leaks aren’t visible, resulting in precious water being lost, but progress is being made. Leakage levels are now at their lowest ever, with water loss reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% nationally.
