New pipes run deep beneath the Treaty City’s streets

Limerick City can look forward to a more reliable water supply following the completion of network replacement works. Uisce Éireann has replaced over 1 kilometre of aged watermains that were prone to bursts and leakage.

The works which commenced in March 2025, involved the replacement of over 1km of old water mains along Brookville Avenue with new modern pipes, and was carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme.

Marking the end of this project, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, Brian McCarthy commented on the benefits: “I look forward to seeing Limerick City thrive with the benefits these new water mains bring. These works form part of a significant investment by Uisce Éireann to upgrade infrastructure and provide great benefits to the community in Limerick City. The replacement of these old, damaged pipes will significantly lower the instances of bursts, outages, and leakage on the network and provide a more secure water supply for years to come. I would like to extend my thanks to the local community for their patience while we carried out these works.”

Following the completion of the works, it is necessary to reinstate the permanent road surface, and these works will be programmed and carried out in due course by Uisce Éireann in partnership with Limerick City Council.

The works were carried out by Ward and Burke on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the national Leakage Reduction Programme. Uisce Éireann is investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 - fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply. Uisce Éireann is on target to reduce the national rate of leakage to 25% by 2030, from 46% in 2018.
