Repairs complete and supply returning after Headford Road burst

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Water supply is returning to normal levels in the Headford Road area of Galway City after the successful repair of a burst water main.

Uisce Éireann crews located and replaced the burst main this morning and customers affected by supply disruptions as a result of the burst should see their supplies restored to normal levels over the coming hours.

Approximately 250 Uisce Éireann customers in Skeilg Ard, Tornog and Tirellan Heights were impacted by supply disruptions this morning. A water tanker was provided for impacted customers at Tesco Express in Ballinfoyle, and this will remain in place this afternoon while the network recharges.

Typically, it takes two to three hours following repairs for normal supply to restore to all customers. However, it may take longer for normal supply to be restored to customers on higher ground or at the end of the network.

Leo O’Shea of Uisce Éireann thanked affected customers for their understanding while these repair works were being carried out.

“Uisce Éireann acknowledges the disruption that can be caused by an unplanned outage such as this one and we wish to thank customers in the area for their patience while these repairs were underway,” said Leo.

“We also wish to thank the crews who worked late into the night to locate the source of the burst and divert water flows to minimise the impact to customers across Galway.”

Previous Updates

Uisce Éireann crews are continuing to work to locate the source of a burst water main on the Headford Road in Galway City this morning.

Crews worked late into the night on Thursday night but have so far been unable to isolate the leak. The Headford Road remains fully open to traffic this morning.

The outage caused by the burst main has been contained to two nearby housing estates, Sceilg Ard and Tornog. Approximately 150 Uisce Éireann customers in these estates will continue to experience supply disruptions this morning.

An alternative water supply in the form of a tanker will be provided for impacted customers today.

Leo O’Shea of Uisce Éireann said crews will resume excavation works to find the source of the leak this morning and will work as quickly as possible to repair the mains.

"We wish to thank affected customers for their patience as we continue to work to repair this complex burst this morning,” said Leo.

“We acknowledge the impact of an unplanned outage and we assure customers that all efforts are being made to restore normal supply as quickly as possible.”
