South Galway communities to reap the benefits of new water mains

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Uisce Éireann crews will shortly be arriving in the villages of Kilcolgan and Ballinderreen to begin works on a major programme of mains replacement.

This substantial programme of works will see almost 4km of aging water mains replaced with new, modern pipes. The works will take place along the N67 from Kilcolgan to Ballinderreen.

Works are due to begin next week and are expected to be completed in early 2026. In all, 3,755 metres of new water mains will be laid in this programme of works, which are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme (LRP).

The project will provide the communities of Kilcolgan, Ballinderreen and surrounding areas with a more secure and reliable supply, and improve the quality of drinking water being supplied to homes and businesses in the area. It will also help to reduce levels of leakage on the network.

Enda Mac Namara, Uisce Éireann’s Programme Manager, said that this extensive mains replacement will provide tangible benefits for the customers and communities of Kilcolgan and Ballinderreen.

“This mains replacement will ensure an improved quality of water being delivered to customers’ taps, while also significantly reducing the risk of water outages and other operational issues on the network.

“The works will also enable Uisce Éireann to reduce levels of leakage on the network, helping to protect and conserve our precious water resources,” said Enda.

Areas of work will be limited to short sections at a time to minimise impact on customers and road users. Some traffic management measures, in the form of lane closures, will be required at certain stages of the works. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.

The works may also involve some short-term water interruptions. The project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions.

The works will be carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
