Successful completion of Water Main Upgrade in Glantane

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Uisce Éireann has successfully completed a vital upgrade to the water infrastructure in Glantane, County Cork, with the replacement of 850 meters of aged water mains, which were prone to frequent bursts. This significant work, undertaken as part of Uisce Éireann’s ongoing Leakage Reduction Programme, is aimed at improving the reliability and resilience of the water supply in the area.

The upgraded infrastructure will reduce the occurrence of leaks, supply interruptions, and maintenance issues, ensuring a more resilient and secure water supply for local residents in Glantane.

Jack Cronin, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, commented on the project's importance: “This upgrade represents a key investment in the long-term sustainability of Glantane’s water network. Replacing these outdated pipes will substantially reduce the risk of disruptions and enhance the reliability of the water supply, ensuring that the community can depend on a more robust service moving forward. We would like to thank the local community for their cooperation and patience as we carried out these essential works.”

Following the completion of the works, it is necessary to reinstate the permanent road surface, and these works will be programmed and carried out in due course by Uisce Éireann in partnership with Cork County Council.

The works were carried out by Ward and Burke on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Previous Updates

The people of Glantane Village in County Cork can look forward to a more secure and reliable water supply with Uisce Éireann prioritising important works to reduce high levels of leakage in the area and improve the resilience of the network. The works involve replacing over 850 metres of old water mains prone to bursts with new modern pipes.

The section of works will take place along Monument to the Church in Glantane Village and Thullery Cross, Glantane, County Cork.  Once these works are completed, customers in this area will enjoy an improved water supply with less disruption. The works, which are being carried out under Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme, will commence in early June and are expected to be completed by July 2025.

Commenting on the project, Jack Cronin, Uisce Éireann said: “Old and damaged water mains remain a huge source of leakage and continue to impact communities right across Ireland, causing low pressure and supply disruption. Replacing these old water mains in poor condition will eliminate existing leaks and significantly reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground. By prioritising these upgrades, we are helping communities like Glantane to thrive. We would like to thank local residents for their cooperation and patience as we carry out these essential works”

To facilitate the safe delivery of the project and to minimise impact on the community, areas of work will be limited to short sections. Traffic management will be in place during this time in the form of Stop/Go and an automated Traffic Light System. Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.

The works may require some short-term water supply interruptions, but the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions. Ward and Burke Construction Ltd. will deliver these works on behalf of Uisce Éireann. The Uisce Éireann Customer Contact Centre, open 24/7 on freephone 1800 278 278, is available to answer any queries. Further information is available on www.water.ie.
