Uisce Éireann restore water supply to areas of Clonmel and apologise for recent interruption

Information below is relevant until further updates are provided here or on our Supply and Service Updates section

Uisce Éireann crews have restored water supply to customers impacted by an unplanned interruption following operational issues at the Glenary Water Treatment Plant during Storm Amy.

Uisce Éireann acknowledge the impact of the water outage locally and apologise to customers for the supply disruption.

Although water supply has returned the volume of treated water stored in the reservoir remains critically low and there may be some areas still experiencing low pressure. We are appealing to our customers fed from the Glenary water treatment plant to conserve water as it returns to ensure it can be maintained for essential purposes. It will take some time for reservoir levels which were depleted to fully recover.

The Boil Water Notice in place since the 26 September, to protect the public health of customers supplied by the Glenary water treatment plant remains in place. It was put in place following operational issues at the plant.

Since then, there have been a series of different challenges at the water treatment plant, impacting routine operations, compounded by changing raw water quality which also caused issues with the plant keeping up with required production. Collectively all these issues depleted storage in the local reservoir which led to the outage impacting parts of Clonmel; all customers are now fed from the treated water storage reservoir and not directly from the plant.

A major capital project to upgrade the water treatment plant at Glenary is well underway. However, ensuring the normal day to day operations of a water treatment plant while delivering an upgrade can be complex.

Works now underway include the full refurbishment of all three filters on site. Temporary arrangements are in place to ensure the engineering team delivering the critical upgrade can take each filter out of service on a sequential basis. This is adding to the challenges and consistent production at the plant for the local operations team.

However, it is necessary to deliver the critical upgrade which is planned for completion in early Spring.

Uisce Éireann’s Pierce Faherty acknowledged the ongoing impact of the Boil Water Notice as well as the recent disruption caused by the outage in parts of Clonmel.

“Maintaining normal operations at the aging water treatment plant during complex and critical upgrades is challenging. Intermittent deterioration in raw water quality due to heavy rainfall, along with regular operational issues, have affected consistent water production and prevented us from lifting the Boil Water Notice.”

“Uisce Éireann would like to apologise to all customers who have experienced an interruption to their supply.

“We would also like to reaffirm our commitment to lifting the Boil Water Notice in place as soon as it is safe to do so. We thank the local community for their patience as we work to do this.

“We are committed to the delivery of the critical upgrade underway at the Glenary Water Treatment Plant to ensure that operational issues being experienced locally become a thing of the past for the local community”.

Previous Updates

Uisce Éireann acknowledges the impact of water outages in parts of Clonmel supplied by the Glenary Water Treatment Plant. The water supply at the treatment plant was interrupted following flash rainfall over the weekend and as a result reservoir levels dropped impacting on supply to customers across the town.

Operational teams worked over the weekend to restore supply, and work continues to maintain production, but reservoir levels remain low and will take some time to recover. As a result, customers will continue to experience no water or low pressure. Normal supply is expected to be restored by 7am on Wednesday 8 October.

The areas affected include Elm Park, Haywood Road, Glenconnor, Cherrymount, Ballingranne, Powerstown Road, Silverspring, and surrounding areas.

Alternative water supplies are available at the following locations:
•    Gurtnamanagh Housing Estate – near Woodies, Ballygarrane
•    Haywood Rd (Civil Defence Yard)
•    Elm Park Housing Estate

Customers are reminded to use their own containers when taking water from the tanker and to boil water before consumption as a precautionary measure, as per advice from the Health Service Executive.
Uisce Éireann’s Pierce Faherty acknowledged the ongoing impact of the Boil Water Notice as well as the disruption caused by the extended outage to parts of Clonmel.

“There are upgrade works being carried out at Glenary Water Treatment Plant. However, issues such as maintaining the normal operations of the water treatment plant while carrying out these complex upgrades, the deterioration in raw water quality entering the plant as a result of recent heavy rain, as well as regular operational issues have caused a disruption to supply, while also preventing the Boil Water Notice from being lifted.”
“Uisce Éireann would like to apologise to all customers who have experienced an interruption to their supply and would like to reassure them that we are working hard to resolve the issues.”

Typically, it takes two to three hours following repairs for normal supply to restore to all customers affected by an unplanned outage. However, it may take longer for normal supply to be restored to customers at the end of the network or on higher ground as the system recharges.
