Water mains replacement works to begin in Dunmore

The residents and businesses of Dunmore can look forward to a more secure and reliable water supply as works are due to commence on a programme of mains replacements in the North Galway town. 

Uisce Éireann crews will be on the ground at Church Street from next week to commence work on a mains replacement programme which will see 251 metres of aging mains replaced with new, modern pipes.  

The works, which are scheduled to begin on Monday, 10 November, will improve the quality of drinking water for customers in Church Street and the surrounding areas. The new mains will also help to prevent leaks, bursts and other operational issues in the future, providing a more secure supply of clean, safe drinking water for the communities of Dunmore. 

In order to minimise disruption, the works will be carried out between the hours of 7pm and 6am. These works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme and will be completed in early 2026. 

Enda Mac Namara, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, said these mains replacements will provide significant benefits for the residents and businesses of Dunmore while also contributing towards Uisce Éireann’s goal of driving down leakage rates nationwide. 

“We’re delighted to be breaking ground on this significant programme of mains replacements in Dunmore,” said Enda. “Once complete, these upgrades will provide an improved supply of drinking water for customers in the area while also reducing the risk of operational disturbances on the network in the future.” 

To facilitate the nighttime works, a temporary road closure has been granted by Galway County Council. This will see Church Street (N83) closed to traffic in both directions from the hours of 7pm until 6am every night from Monday next (10 November) until Friday, 12 December. 

The road will reopen in both directions at 6am every morning to cater to daytime traffic, including HGVs. Local and emergency access will be maintained at all times.  

While the road is closed, diversions will be in place in both directions. Traffic leaving the town will be diverted via the R360 (Sion Hill) to its junction with the R327 at Pollredmond, then back via the R327 to Cloonfad. Traffic entering the town from the Cloonfad side will be diverted by the same route, via the R327 and R360. 

These works will be carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
