Win for Westmeath as Uisce Éireann complete two water supply improvement projects

The communities of Bunbrosa, Monilea, Ballynagall and Knockdrin, outside Mullingar can look forward to a more secure and reliable water supply as Uisce Éireann complete upgrade works on two critical water main replacement projects.

The investment involved replacement of over 4 kilometres of aged water mains with new modern pipes which will now significantly lower the instances of bursts and supply disruptions, providing a more reliable water supply for local homes and businesses for years to come.

Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, is pleased to have delivered these important projects for the community.  “We are delighted to have completed these works that are now benefitting local homes and businesses, across Bunbrosa, Monilea, Ballynagall and Knockdrin.

“By replacing old water mains, we ensure a more sustainable water supply, eliminate existing leaks, and significantly reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground protecting our most precious resource.

“In addition to the local communities reaping the rewards of this new water infrastructure these upgrades are an important step in the ongoing efforts to safeguard the water supply for the wider Mullingar area. I would like to thank the public and road users for their patience and support while these works were being completed.”

A variety of measures have been taken to protect Lough Owel, which is the source for the Mullingar Regional supply, including water main replacement, active leak detection and repairs across the network alongside ongoing conservation efforts by the local community.

Efforts to reduce water lost through leakage are ongoing. This includes installing control valves at key locations in the network to help prevent bursts and improve overall management, enabling reservoirs to recover during periods of low demand.

Enhancements in data quality will soon be realised thanks to the advanced metering program, which is now underway.

Shareridge carried out recent works on behalf of Uisce Éireann. Both projects were delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme which continues to deliver significant benefits to communities across Ireland, including improved water quality, provision of a more resilient and sustainable water supply for customers, and considerable water savings.
