Ballymore Eustace to Saggart Critical Pipeline Repair
Uisce Éireann is undertaking the largest planned mains repair to date to secure the water supply to 1.7 million people across the Greater Dublin Area.
Uisce Éireann is carrying out critical and complex repair works to a major pipeline that connects Ballymore Eustace Water Treatment Plant and the Saggart Reservoir. This is a major pipeline that supplies one third of the Greater Dublin Area’s (GDA) drinking water and will be turned off to facilitate these critical repairs. These planned essential works are needed to safeguard water supply for the GDA.
Uisce Éireann has prepared for these critical works by ensuring all treated water reservoirs in the GDA are as full as possible. However, there is still a risk that customers in Dublin and parts of Kildare and Wicklow may experience interruptions to their water supply including low pressure, discoloured water, or water outages over the August Bank Holiday Weekend.
A number of customers in Kill, Arthurstown, Rathmore, Athgoe and Tipperkevin will definitely experience an interruption to supply over the weekend and alternative water supply locations are detailed below.
We are appealing to customers in Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow to conserve water to help maintain everyone’s water supply during these critical repair works.

What are the benefits of the critical repair works?
Ballymore Eustace is Ireland’s largest water treatment plant and Saggart Reservoir is a newly upgraded reservoir which stores drinking water from this plant. More than one third of people living in the Greater Dublin Area (GDA) depend on this important pipeline that connects them for clean, safe drinking water.
These essential works are necessary to proactively repair a section of the pipeline that is likely to burst if not fixed. A burst on this pipeline would result in unplanned and widespread water outages that could take a long time to repair and affect up to 1.7 million people.
Specialist crews will repair five leaks and also replace 35 metres of worn-out pipeline.
The critical repair works will:
- Ensure the security and resilience of drinking water supply in the GDA;
- Save water by repairing five leaks on the pipeline; and
- Repair a section of the pipeline that is likely to burst if not fixed.
Water Conservation is key!
For this weekend we are asking everyone to act together and only use water for essential needs. Please hold off on filling baths, car washing, power hosing, window washing, filling paddling pools, watering plants and anything that is not vital.
Small actions can help maintain everyone’s water supply during the critical repair works. By saving just 15 litres of water a day, you can give the specialist crews more time to complete these essential works.
Who may be affected by the critical repair works?
The water running through this major pipeline needs to be turned off during the works. Uisce Éireann has prepared for this by ensuring all of our treated water reservoirs in the GDA are as full as possible.
Specialist teams will work as quickly as possible through the day and night to complete these critical works and restore normal water supply as quickly as possible.
Areas that may experience potential interruptions are shown on the map/include large parts of south and southwest Dublin, some parts of north Dublin extending to Donaghmede, Darndale and Ballymun, parts of north Wicklow including Blessington, and part of east Kildare including Leixlip.
For this weekend we are asking everyone to act together and only use water for essential needs. Please hold off on filling baths, car washing, power hosing, window washing, filling paddling pools, watering plants and anything that is not vital. Reducing your water use will help maintain or extend water supply during the repairs, for yourself and, for vulnerable and high-risk users including hospitals and care homes.
How long will these critical works take to complete?
Uisce Éireann has extensively planned and prepared for how to carry out these complex and critical works safely and quickly. We will be working around the clock over the August Bank Holiday Weekend to complete these works as safely and quickly as possible.
There is a chance that interruptions to water supply could last beyond the weekend. The situation on the ground will be monitored closely. Uisce Éireann will inform customers as early as possible of the location and duration of any prolonged impacts.
We understand the inconvenience caused by interruptions to water supply and would like to thank communities for their patience and cooperation while we deliver these essential works.
