Growth and Development Programme - Maynooth Transfer Pipeline Project
Uisce Éireann is delivering a project to upgrade the wastewater network to enable growth and development in Maynooth and Kilcock.
The Maynooth Transfer Pipeline Project involves the construction of a pipeline between the existing Maynooth Wastewater Pump Station and Leixlip Wastewater Treatment Plant. Upgrade works are also required to the Maynooth Wastewater Pump Station.
This project is being delivered to support existing and future developments within the community. Construction of the new pipeline along with the required upgrade works to the Maynooth Wastewater Pump Station will improve the capacity of the existing wastewater network in the area, improving performance and reducing demands on the current network.
The project, representing a €24 million investment, will create additional capacity in the wastewater network to enable the delivery of an additional 11,500 housing units.
The works are being carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Coffey Construction and are expected to be completed in 2027.
What is involved in this project?
- Construction of 8.9 kilometers of new sewer pipeline from Maynooth Wastewater Pump Station at Dunboyne Road, to Confey in Leixlip.
- Upgrades to the existing Maynooth Wastewater Pump Station.
- In addition to upgrading the wastewater network, Uisce Éireann is also installing a new water main on Confey Road. These works are being undertaken simultaneously with the Maynooth Wastewater Transfer Pipeline project. 4.3km of water main is being installed as part of the first phase of work. Road closures will be the same as Maynooth Transfer Pipeline, where there is overlap.

Progress to date:
Maynooth WW Transfer Pipeline:
- To date, 7km of the 8.9 km is complete, with 1.9 km in road remaining.
- Works along the R149, from the junction of L1015 Captains Hill to the L5052 junction at Confey, were completed over the Easter Holidays (30 March to 10 April).
Confey Road Watermain Upgrade - Phase 1
- 2.4 km of the 4.3 km watermain has been installed, with 1.9 km remaining in the road.
What's happening now?
- L1015 Closure – Extension to 30 June 2026
The temporary road closure on the L1015, from the L1014 junction at Kellystown to the R149 junction at Captain’s Hill, will now be extended until 30 June 2026.
To minimise disruption to road users, traffic will be maintained from the L5051 until works approach this area at the end of May / early June. See image above.
Works will move to the L5051 junction and Captain’s Hill, with completion expected by late June. See image above.
One additional road closure will be required following the completion of the current works, subject to agreement with KCC. Further details will be confirmed and communicated in advance; a provisional date for this road closure to take place is in July 2026 subject to agreement.
Permanent reinstatement works on roads affected by previous closures are to be agreed with KCC and will be completed under one lane closure to reduce traffic impact. Further details will be shared in advance.
L1015 Kellystown Closure - Diversion Routes
For general traffic on the L1015:
Westbound traffic:
- The closure begins at the L1015 / R149 junction. Traffic will divert left onto the R149 (Captain’s Hill) and continue to Leixlip Main Street. From there, follow Main Street to the L1014, then turn right and continue until you rejoin the L1015 beyond the closure.
- The section of the L1015 from the junction with the L5051 to the junction with the R149 will remain open to traffic until works approach this area.
Eastbound traffic:
The closure begins at the L1015 / L1014 junction at Kellystown. Traffic will divert onto the L1014, then turn left onto the R148. Continue on the R148 to the R149 (Captain’s Hill), turn left, and follow this route to rejoin the L1015 beyond the closure.
For HGVs:
- HGVs travelling east:
HGVs will be diverted via the R157, following the signed route through Castlefarm, Summerhill and Bennetstown roundabouts. Traffic will then continue via the M3 junctions, R147 and R156 before joining the R149 (Clonee Road), which will bring drivers to the end of the road closure.
- HGVs travelling west:
Westbound HGVs will follow the R149 before diverting onto the R156 and onwards to the R147 and R157. The diversion continues via Bennetstown, Summerhill.
All diversion routes will be clearly signposted, as agreed with the Council and An Garda Síochána. Emergency access and restricted local access will be maintained at all times.
Standard working hours are 7:30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
Works may involve planned interruptions to water supply. Customers will be notified in advance of any planned water outages.
