Uisce Éireann is working to end the unacceptable practice of untreated wastewater being discharged to Intrinsic Bay near Kilkee.
Uisce Éireann is progressing a project to install a new wastewater treatment plant in Kilkee and end the discharge of raw sewage to the marine environment.
What’s Happening Now?
Uisce Éireann is currently reviewing the decision by An Bord Pleanála and the next steps will include, (among others) the progression of the acquisition of land/wayleaves/rights of way via Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO). The Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) for the scheme has been published. Final timelines will be confirmed following this. We will continue to provide project updates via Uisce Éireann’s channels.
What are the benefits of this project?
The benefits of these works will include:
Improved water quality in the receiving waters at Intrinsic Bay in compliance with national and EU regulations relating to the treatment of wastewater
Enhanced environmental amenity of Kilkee
Protection of recreational swimming, fishing, boating and sightseeing waters
Provision for social and economic development and future growth within the Kilkee area
These works will involve:
The construction of a new wastewater treatment plant and new wastewater pumping station.
Construction of a new rising main to transfer treated wastewater to the existing outfall.
All works will be tested and commissioned prior to coming into operation.
